What industrialization took was the ordinary practice of making. Not the sacred practice. Not the Instagram-worthy practice. The Maker Movement gave back a version of making that is extraordinary—special, branded, expensive, and opt-in. It told us we could reclaim something essential, then charged admission. It offered community, then built communities that exclude based on entry cost.

When making becomes something you have to opt into and purchase access to, we’ve simply replicated the same economic exclusions that industrialization created. Better than nothing isn’t the same as good enough.

How is this different from the Arts and Crafts movement of the 19th century?

The parallels are uncomfortable. William Morris wanted handmade goods available to everyone, but the cost of skilled labor made Morris & Co. products luxury items. The Maker Movement talks about democratizing creation while selling $285 beginner kits and $75/hour workshop time. The pattern repeats: a critique of industrial production gets absorbed by the market it criticized, becoming a premium product for people who can afford the premium. The difference is that the Arts and Crafts movement at least maintained a critique. The Maker Movement largely doesn’t. It sells the solution without acknowledging the problem.

Start by fixing something. Not making something new—fixing something that’s broken. Mend a seam. Repair a chair leg. Patch a wall. The entry point for making should be necessity, not aspiration. Use what you already have. Borrow tools. Watch someone on YouTube who works in their garage, not their studio. Find the local repair café. The alternative to the Maker Movement isn’t giving up on handwork—it’s refusing to treat handwork as a luxury product. The making itself is free. It’s always been free. The movement just wants you to forget that.
